Welcome to the Stamford Town Council
About Your Council
Stamford Town Council was formerly a Borough Council, prior to the local government reorganisation in 1974. Although called a Town Council its responsibilities and powers are the same as any Parish Council. It has certain civic duties that it is required to undertake by law within its parish boundary. Stamford has 21 Councillors elected for a four year term who represent the four Wards within the town; these are St. George’s Ward, All Saints’ Ward, St. Mary’s Ward and St. John’s Ward. The Town Council meets monthly as a Full Council and also meets as smaller Committees to progress initiatives, resolve issues and to make recommendations to the full Town Council. See the Meetings section of this website for more details and for meetings schedule. In 2007 Stamford Town Council achieved Quality Council status.
All Councillors are volunteers dedicated to serving the best interests of Stamford residents. Every year a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected at an Annual Town Council meeting. Heads of Committees and Council Representatives to outside bodies are also duly elected at that time.
Councillors also act as Trustees for the Harry Skells Trust.
The Town Clerk administrates and implements the decisions of the Town Council and is responsible for ensuring the Council complies with its legal obligations.
